Given the foundational commitment that a Greenville University education is not complete without spiritual formation, students cannot be excused from spiritual formation expectations. However, students facing unique circumstances can apply for an exemption from reaching their spiritual formation requirements through chapel or other events hosted by the OSF. Situations that may allow someone to qualify for an exemption may include but are not limited to: caregiving or parental responsibilities, commuters who don’t have class on campus before noon on MWF, unavoidable work conflicts, student teaching/internships for academic credit, and medical concerns or disability accommodations.
After the Office of Spiritual Formation receives and reviews the exemption form, the student will receive a response with approval of or edits to the personal formation plan. Students who receive an exemption must complete all elements of their personal formation plan by the final day of the semester to avoid being placed on chapel probation.
Alternative personal formation options could include but are not limited to:
- Meeting with a mentor - Attending a local church for worship, Sunday School, or small group - Watching recordings of chapel services - Acts of service
All personal formation plans will require some kind of written reflection component.
